  1. This reading list covers two modules: En2050 and EN2350. Please check which tutor you have been assigned. Each tutor will post a list on Blackboard of the primary texts, drawn from the list below, which they will be covering in seminars.

The best, most reliable editions of texts are marked 'essential' on this list. This doesn't mean it's essential you actually own them, just that they're among the best editions.

To help with assessments, we recommend that you try to read a range of primary and secondary texts, not simply those covered in your seminars.

This is a long reading list - use the 'table of contents' to navigate it. It is divided by author, (grouping Restoration dramatists together and later eighteenth century poets together, as seminars tend to do). The sections for specific writers are followed by a section on textual analysis resources, and a section on general background reading useful for themes on the module.

Some of the e-books here will only allow a certain number of people to access them at one time. To avoid problems and to allow others to access the resource, download and save chapters to read on screen rather than reading them online.

Finally, readinglists@ is not the world's most intelligent reading list system! It can't always, for example, distinguish between author's first and last names. Don't use it to cut-and-paste material for bibliographies and references.

    8. Pepys 15 items
      1. Primary texts 4 items
        1. Primary texts: For assessed work you need to consult a version of Pepys's Diary edited by Latham and Matthews – these are the only reliable editions. The latter is the full 11 volumes text with notes. A cheap edition is The Concise Pepys ed. by Lord Braybrooke and Stuart Sims, which is ok for very basic seminar work but needs to be used with awareness of its faults (heavily censored, changing the words around, etc).
